Winners of the AIB Photojournalism Awards 2011 announced

The Awards, which are open to members of the Press Photographer’s Association of Ireland, showcase and reward the very best of Irish photojournalism. This year, over 2,010 images were entered by 123 photographers from around the country, across nine categories – news, daily life, sports action, sports portfolio, portrait, environment, politics, arts & entertainment and reportage.
This year’s expert panel of Judges comprised Chairperson, Bride Rosney, Jeff Mitchell, award winning Staff Photographer with Getty Images and award-winning Freelance Photographer, David Chancellor.
Commenting on this year’s winner, the Judge’s said; “In all the images included in the portfolio of this photographer two attributes are to the fore – fantastic timing and a great news sense. In some instances other photographers submitted similar images from the same event but this photographer had the edge – capturing emotion, showing humour, where appropriate and always with a very good eye. His images of tragic situations, such as Haiti, can be strong yet gentle.”
Speaking at the awards ceremony, Robbie Henneberry, Managing Director, AIB (RoI), said; “The AIB Photojournalism Awards recognise and reward the very best of photojournalism in Ireland. The touring exhibition, which this year contains 122 images, allows AIB to showcase these talents to a nationwide audience, through our branch network. On behalf of AIB, I would like to congratulate Mark, on being named the AIB Photojournalist of the Year 2011.”
David Sleator, President, Press Photographers Association of Ireland, said; “I wish to congratulate my colleague Mark on his achievements and contribution to photojournalism in Ireland. The images in Mark’s portfolio are outstanding, with a great sensitivity expressed and incredible eye for capturing emotion. Mark is a highly-respected member of our association and profession, whose dedication and commitment have been well rewarded.”
The AIB Photojournalism Exhibition, featuring 122 prints, opens in AIB Bank, Cornelscourt, on Tuesday, 22nd February 2011. It will then go on tour, visiting selected AIB branches and other venues nationwide. Masterclasses for schools, camera clubs and photography students will also be held in locations throughout the country over the coming months.
