About Us

The Press Photographers Association of Ireland was formed in 1978 and initially comprised the staff photographers of Ireland's national and regional newspapers as well as agencies and freelancers.

The association has organised the Press Photographer of the Year Award that recognises the very best in photo-journalism across various categories such as Politics, People, Nature & Environment as well as Sport and more recently Multimedia.

The association issues a PRESS identification card that is widely accepted by An Garda Siochana, Óglaigh Na hEireann and other government bodies as recognition of bona fide professional press photographers.

Membership Criteria

Full-time press photographers resident on the island of Ireland may apply for Ordinary membership of the association and are required to provide evidence of their work that meets the criteria of press photography being their principal source of income either as an full-time employee or a self-employed freelance and for a period of not less than two years.

Application Process

An application form for membership is available by contacting membershipsecretary@ppai.ie and prospective candidates must obtain the support of a proposer and seconder who are each existing ordinary members of the association. Applicants must be personally known, or at least sufficiently acquainted with the member to enable them to make a reasonable assessment of the applicant’s suitability for membership.

A fully completed application form is then presented to the executive committee of the association for election. Further details are contained within the application form.

Please note that it is the applicant's responsibility to complete the form and provide the supporting evidence establishing full-time occupation. The Membership Secretary may assist with some details but the proposer and seconder should act as sponsors in the first instance.
